Hektoen Enteric Agar is used for the isolation and differentiation of enteric pathogens. Hektoen Enteric Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Hektoen Enteric Agar was developed in 1967 by King and Metzger. Compared to other enteric differentiating media commonly used, Hektoen Enteric Agar increased the isolation rate of Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. This was accomplished by increasing the carbohydrate and peptone content of the medium in order to counteract the inhibitory effects of bile salts and indicators. King and Metzger formulated a medium that slightly inhibited growth of Salmonella and Shigella, while inhibiting Gram-positive microorganisms. Enzymatic Digest of Animal Tissue provides nitrogen, carbon, and amino acids required for organism growth. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/hektoen-enteric-agar

Lactobacilli MRS Agar is used for the cultivation of lactobacilli and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.MRS Agar is a medium for the cultivation and enumeration of Lactobacillus spp. Originally developed in 1960 by de Man, Rogosa & Sharpe, the medium is suitable for most lactic acid bacteria and is intended as a substitute for Tomato Juice Agar. When acidified to pH 5.4 MRS Agar can be used to enumerate Lactobacillus bulgaricus in yogurts.Nutrition is provided by a mixture of carefully selected peptones, glucose, beef & yeast extracts while Tween 80, magnesium and manganese sulfates act as growth stimulants. Selectivity against streptococci & molds is provided by ammonium citrate and sodium acetate. Used at low pH, ammonium citrate allows growth of lactobacilli while inhibiting a number of other microorganism groups. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/lactobacilli-mrs-agar

Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar is used for the cultivation and enumeration of microorganisms in dairy and bottled water products. Tryptone Glucose Extract (TGE) Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In the 1930’s, Bower and Hucker developed a medium for detecting bacteria in milk and other dairy products. Prickett used a glucose agar containing tryptone to study thermophilic bacteria in milk. This medium is known as Yeast Dextrose Agar. In 1948, the American Public Health Association (APHA) adopted Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar for use in testing milk and dairy products. Currently, APHA specifies Tryptone Glucose Extract Agar for the heterotrophic plate count procedure in testing bottled water. KF Streptococcus Agar is used with triphenyltetrazolium chloride for the selective isolation and enumeration of fecal streptococci in a laboratory setting. KF Streptococcus Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.KF Streptococcus Agar was developed by Kenner, Clark, and Kabler for the detection of fecal streptococci in surface waters. KF Streptococcus Agar is currently used in detecting fecal streptococci in water, foods, and other materials through the membrane filtration technique or pour plate method. Fecal streptococci are normal inhabitants in the intestines, and the presence of fecal streptococci can be used as an indication of fecal contamination. The presence of fecal streptococci is of value in determining pollution sources because certain fecal streptococci are host-specific.For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/kf-streptococcus-agar

Brain Heart Infusion Agar is used for the cultivation of a wide variety of fastidious organisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A general purpose nutritious agar base. This medium was first used for the isolation of dental pathogens. With the addition of 7% defibrinated blood the medium will support the growth of a wide range of fastidious organisms, the phosphate buffer will help neutralize the acids produced from the utilization of glucose and thus maintain viability. The medium is not recommended for the determination of hemolytic reactions because of the glucose content.

A-1 Medium is used for the detection of coliform organisms in water and food in a laboratory setting. A-1 Medium is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Since the early 1900’s enumeration of coliform organisms, specifically E. coli, have been used to determine water purity. Elevated temperature and most-probable-number (MPN) methods are routinely used for analysis of water and food samples for presence of fecal coliforms. A-1 Medium was formulated to hasten E. coli recovery and reduce the incidence of false positive cultures. In 1972 Andrews and Presnell developed A-1 Medium. This medium recovers E. coli from estuarine water in 24 hours instead of 72 hours, and in greater numbers without the pre-enrichment step. A-1 Medium can be used in a single step procedure for the detection of fecal coliforms in source water, seawater, treated wastewater, and foods. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/a-1-medium

Baird Parker Agar is used for the cultivation of Staphylococcus aureus from foodstuffs according to ISO 6888, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Originally introduced in 1962, this medium was developed by Baird-Parker to overcome the problems of recovering damaged Staphylococcus aureus from foodstuffs. This version of the medium is formulated according to ISO 6888-1:1999+A1:2003 and is in compliance with ISO 6888-2:2003+A1:2003 and ISO 6888-3:2003.Baird-Parker medium is highly selective by nature, due to the presence of potassium tellurite and lithium chloride. Tellurite inhibits most coliforms and is also reduced to telluride by S. aureus, giving the typical black colonies. Glycine and sodium pyruvate are both used as growth factors by staphylococci while the pyruvate also neutralizes any toxic peroxides that may be formed. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/baird-parker-agar-base

Rappaport-Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth is used for the enrichment and selective isolation of Salmonella spp. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements. Rappaport-Vassiliadis Salmonella Enrichment Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A medium recommended by the Harmonized Pharmacopoeia for the enrichment and selective isolation of Salmonella spp.from non-sterile samples. Malachite green and magnesium chloride act as selective agents, combined with high osmotic pressure and low pH to effectively inhibit non-target competitive organisms. Soya peptone provides a source of nitrogen and potassium phosphate acts as a buffer. Some Salmonella (S. typhi and S. enteritidis) are known to be sensitive to malachite green and as such may fail to grow. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/rappaport-vassiliadis-salmonella-enrichment-broth

DNase Agar is used for the differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of deoxyribonuclease activity and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1956, Weckman and Catlin showed a correlation between increased DNase activity of Staphylococcus aureus and positive coagulase activity. Their research suggested DNase activity could be used to identify potentially pathogenic staphylococci. DiSalvo confirmed their results by obtaining excellent correlation between coagulase and DNase activity of staphylococci isolated from clinical specimens. Jeffries, Holtman, and Guse incorporated DNA in agar to study DNase production by bacteria and fungi. Polymerized DNA precipitates in the presence of 1N HCl, creating an opaque medium. Organisms that degrade DNA produce a clear zone around an inoculum streak. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/dnase-agar
